A major international initiative, NMI-Q, was officially launched by Lord Vallance, UK Minister for Science, Innovation, Research, and Nuclear, at the "Quantum Metrology: From Foundations to the Future" event held on November 3, 2025. This strategic alliance unites national metrology institutes (NMIs) from the G7 nations Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK, and the US alongside Australia, in a coordinated push to create reliable, interoperable, and scalable measurement solutions for quantum technologies.
The NMI-Q collaboration aims to accelerate the quantum economy by ensuring trusted measurement science, developing standardized methodologies, and supporting startups and established companies in quantum applications, computing, sensing, and communication. Industry and academia will benefit from peer-reviewed frameworks, best practices, and international benchmarks that foster innovation and market confidence.
Leaders emphasized that no single institute can tackle the complexity of quantum development alone, making cooperation vital for building a trustworthy foundation. The alliance aspires to shape the future of quantum by sharing standards and references from the earliest stages of technology development, ultimately leading to “trustable by design” products and a robust quantum ecosystem.
The signing ceremony marks the culmination of four years of partnership groundwork, representing a major step forward for global metrology and quantum industry alignment. The legacy of NMI-Q is expected to endure, following the path of historic organizations like BIPM, with hopes to support new technologies for generations.
