The Department of Science & Technology (DST), Government of India, recently hosted "Session I – Quantum Science & Technology," spotlighting significant progress under the National Quantum Mission (NQM). Experts and startup leaders discussed India’s multi-pronged approach to building a robust quantum ecosystem, from research to commercialization.
Key highlights included advances in satellite-based Quantum Key Distribution (QKD), the development of India’s first metro-area quantum access networks, and upcoming quantum internet connectivity projected by 2027. Leading research hubs and startups demonstrated tangible out-of-lab solutions—such as 300km quantum-secure communication links and superconducting qubit processors—placing India alongside global quantum leaders.
Speakers like Professor Rajamani Vijay Ragwan (TIFR Mumbai) and deep tech entrepreneurs emphasized the importance of domestic hardware development, policy support, and talent pipelines. Startups play a pivotal role as technology readiness accelerators, while large-scale academic collaboration ensures rapid prototyping and industrialization. Recognizing challenges in scaling, funding, and supply chains, the forum reiterated policy requests such as tax relief and infrastructure support for next-generation quantum hardware.
Panel discussions highlighted the launch of specialized quantum education programs, hands-on training labs, and a rolling call to fund early-stage startups. The mission’s vision is for India to achieve technological sovereignty, export global-standard quantum products, and nurture a sustainable innovation ecosystem.
