A new international initiative, NMI-Q, has been officially launched to unite leading National Metrology Institutes (NMIs) from G7 countries and Australia in accelerating the development and adoption of quantum technologies. The initiative focuses on coordinated research, sharing best measurement practices, and supporting standards development to ensure reliable and scalable quantum technologies.
Launched by UK Science Minister Lord Vallance on November 3 at the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) in Teddington during the International Year of Quantum celebrations, NMI-Q aims to boost economic growth and national security by advancing quantum applications across sectors such as healthcare and communications. The partnership includes NMIs from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK, the US, and Australia.
Dr. Peter Thompson, CEO of NPL, highlighted the role of NMI-Q in underpinning innovations in secure communications, computing, and sensing with trusted science and metrology. The initiative will conduct collaborative pre-standardisation research, develop measurement best practices, support international standards, and engage global stakeholders to unlock the full potential of quantum technologies.
The NMI-Q Steering Committee, composed of representatives from the founding countries, will steer the initiative’s strategic and technical roadmap, aiming to ensure interoperable and scalable quantum solutions worldwide.
