IBM Quantum Explains the Future of Quantum Computing in New York Tech Week 2026

IBM Says Quantum Computing Could Transform Medicine, Materials, and Security

IBM has released a new video featuring Global IBM Quantum Content and Education Lead Olivia Lanes, who explains how quantum computing could shape the future of multiple industries. The video, published on July 1, 2026, was recorded during New York Tech Week 2026 and focuses on common questions and misconceptions about the emerging technology.

Lanes says quantum computing is not about replacing everyday personal computers, but about helping scientists and engineers make breakthroughs in areas such as drug discovery, therapeutic medicines, new materials, and greener, more efficient technologies. According to the video, those gains could eventually influence daily life in ways that may not be immediately visible to users.

The video also addresses security. Lanes explains that quantum computers are not “unhackable,” but that quantum-based secure messaging could make it easier to detect if a message has been intercepted. The discussion presents quantum communication as a future tool for stronger information protection.

IBM’s broader vision, as described in the video, is a computing environment where supercomputers and quantum computers work together in the same data center. In that model, classical hardware and quantum hardware would each handle the parts of an algorithm they are best suited for.
