IonQ, the world’s leading quantum technology company, in partnership with a Swiss consortium of world-class academic, government, and industry institutions, has launched the Geneva Quantum Network (GQN), marking Switzerland’s first dedicated citywide quantum network. This pivotal infrastructure initiative connects key research institutions, enterprises, and public organizations across Geneva, including CERN, Rolex SA, the University of Geneva, and the Haute École du Paysage, d’Ingénierie et d’Architecture (HEPIA).
The GQN leverages existing fiber-optic cables and ID Quantique’s advanced quantum key distribution (QKD) and detection systems, enabling cutting-edge experiments in quantum communication and ultra-precise time synchronization. By distributing entangled photons between institutions like UNIGE, CERN, and HEPIA, the network aims to accelerate breakthroughs in quantum information transfer and cybersecurity.
Niccolo de Masi, Chairman and CEO of IonQ, highlighted the importance of this collaboration in strengthening quantum cybersecurity and advancing communications research. The GQN exemplifies IonQ’s commitment to building a scalable, global quantum ecosystem, following successful expansions in other nations.
This landmark citywide quantum network initiative not only fosters research excellence but also enhances secure communications critical for diverse sectors such as finance, defense, and government, outlining a significant step toward a quantum-enabled future in Switzerland and beyond.
